Typepad Tutorials: Deleting Comments PDF Print E-mail

We all have run-ins with blog trolls eventually.  The best course of action is just to delete their comments and ignore them.

Here's how to delete a comment in Typepad:

Log on to your account. Click the "Weblogs" tab.

Next to your blog name, in the shortcuts section on the right is a link that says "List Comments."  Click on this link.

If you see the comment there, you can quick delete it from this page.  Put a check in the box next to the comment you want to delete, then hit the "delete" button at the bottom.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE.

If the comment was particularly bad, you might want to think about banning that IP address from commenting on your blog again.  Or at least try to figure out who they are.

Double-click on the comment (if you click once on it, a pop-up window will give you the options to edit, unpublish, or delete the comment.)  When you double-click on the comment, you're taken to a page where you can view just that comment's information.  Here you will see what the commenter typed in the "Name," "E-mail address," and "URL" boxes -- if it's a really nasty person, they most likely lied about these.  But there's one thing they CAN'T lie to you about, and that is their IP (Internet Provider) address.

The IP address of the commentor will be listed under their name.  This can help identify where the commentor is located.  If you have SiteMeter or another stats counter, you can track the activity of this IP on your blog.  A person's IP address can change and obviously if they use computers in multiple locations it will change, but you can find out their approximate location.  You can also from this page click on "View all comments from this IP address" and that will let you know if they have commented on your blog before.

Highlight and copy the IP number (hold down "control" and "C," then let go.  Go to the following webpage: http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm

Enter the IP address in the "IP Address to Locate" box (put your cursor in the  box, then paste by holding down "control" and "V" and letting go.)  Then hit the "submit" button and you will get information about that IP.
